BRAILLE INSTITUTE LIBRARY WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Braille Institute Library has been recognized as the best in the nation by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) a division of the Library of Congress. The award was presented June 1, 2005 in ceremonies at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. to Henry Chang, Ph.D., Director of Braille Institute Library Services and Leslie Stocker, President, Braille Institute.

“Braille Institute easily exceeded the award criteria,” said Frank Kurt Cylke, NLS director. “Not only did the library continue to meet the needs of patrons during a time of budget cuts and staff reductions, its readership and circulation increased substantially. Most important, it received a 99 percent patron approval rating.”

“I am elated that Braille Institute Library has been selected to receive the first Network Library of the Year Award,” said Stocker. “This reflects the outstanding professional leadership of Dr. Henry Chang and the excellent work of our staff.”

The award recognizes excellence, innovation and special achievements by an NLS regional library in providing library services to blind and physically handicapped individuals during a calendar year. The selection was based on three criteria: mission suppor
t, creativity & innovation and patron satisfaction.
